Hey Andrea,

I'm a fairly new freelancer on this platform so I'd love some feedback on my profile and how I could optimize it in order to land more proposals and even better- get more invites!

Here's the link to my profile: https://www.upwork.com/freelancers/sakshi

Thank you for your time

Hi Sakshi,

I looked through your profile and I have only a few suggestions that might help improve it:

Hourly Rate: Your hourly rate is okay, but it might be better to use a value like $12.00/hour or $13.00/hour.

Portfolio: I suggest adding a few more items to your portfolio. Clients will expect to see several samples from a graphic designer. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Skills: Make sure you have all of the relevant skill categories selected. We can select up to 15, but you should only include skills that are relevant to your title and summary. The biggest reason to update your skills categories is so clients can find you when they search for your specific skills, and so Upwork’s matching algorithms can better match you with relevant jobs.

Employment History: Add short job descriptions for each job in your employment history; especially since these jobs are highly relevant to your Upwork profile.

Other Edits: Correct the spelling of "Designer" in your Video Editing specialized profile title. Also, change that hourly rate to either $12.00/hour or $13.00/hour.

After you make these updates, start applying for jobs that match your qualifications and skills by writing great cover letters. In your cover letters, always make sure you create a custom response based on the client's job. Focus on the client's specific points in their job description; highlight your qualifications; and tell the client how you will meet their requirements.

Good luck!

Hello Upwork Community, I am looking for suggestions on improving my upwork Profile

Hello Shahid,

I have a few suggestions that might help improve your profile:

Title: Edit the terms React and Node by adding a space or a period: (Fullstack Developer | React.js | Node.js | Javascript | Typescript). This will keep Upwork's algorithms focused on the right wording.

Overview/Summary: The first thing I noticed about your summary is its length. Most clients will never read this much information, so I suggest finding a way to condense it.

Next, your summary is well-written, but it speaks mostly about you and your experience. You only tell the client what you can provide to them a few times, and being client-focused is the most important thing you can write in your summary. The first paragraph starts with experience, passion and dedication. These are all great qualities, but clients rarely care about these qualities. Clients want results, and if they have to read too much about "you" and not about "them," they will only read a line or two and leave.

The first two sentences of your summary are important because the client sees them when searching for freelancers. You want those first two lines to be impactful, and hopefully the client is convinced to click and read your profile. I would probably move content in your last paragraph to the top, and revise it this way:

I'm a highly skilled Full-Stack Developer focused on crafting efficient and salable solutions. I can collaborate with you to build a custom web application, e-commerce platform, or assist with ongoing development, and deliver exceptional results.

I have successfully completed numerous projects across various industries. My dedication to delivering exceptional results, combined with my proficiency in cutting-edge technologies, makes me an ideal candidate for your upcoming projects.

(The content after this is good. It's lengthy, so if you can combine any technical expertise with project management, that might help decrease the size of your summary.)

Let's discuss your project requirements and start working together to bring your ideas to life. Feel free to reach out to me via Upwork messaging. I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Portfolio: I think you need a few more items in your portfolio to showcase any sample work you have completed. Clients will expect more than sample from a developer--especially anything on the front-end like landing pages, mobile app screenshots, etc.

Employment History: Add short job descriptions for each job in your employment history.

I think that's it for now.

Good luck!

Hi Blessing,

I looked through your profile and there several problems you need to correct:

Photo: You should probably change your profile photo. The picture in your photo should be a close-up image of your head and shoulders that clearly shows your face. Read through Upwork's best practices for How to Choose A Good Profile Picture.

Title: Your title does not indicate which services you will provide. Your summary says you are a data entry clerk, so your title should be something like Data Entry Clerk or Data Entry Specialist.

Overview/Summary: You should provide more information that tells clients what they will get with your data entry service. You mention spreadsheets and documentation, but is there anything else you will provide to clients? Clients need as much information as you can give them about how your services will benefit them.

You should also add more skill categories to your skills list. Only add skills that are related do your data entry services. Then, you can add a portfolio to to demonstrate your data entry skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Make sure your profile is 100% complete before applying to jobs. Click the Academy link at the top of the screen and dive into the Courses and Learning Paths. Once your profile is complete and you better understand the Upwork platform, read through How To Create a Proposal That Wins Jobs.

Hi Waqas,

Welcome to Upwork.

I looked through your profile and I think it's a good start. Your summary has good skill and background information, but the summary works best when it focuses on a potential Upwork client's needs. Upwork clients expect to read about your skills and qualifications, but they really want to know how your skills/qualifications will benefit them.

For you, Upwork clients will want to know what types of financial services you can provide and how will those services make their business/organization better. Clients are looking for results. You provide a really good example of this in your last sentence: "Closely monitoring accounts and taking preemptive actions to help clients come out of financial stress." To make statements like this more client-focused, you could revise it to say: "I closely monitoring your accounts and taking preemptive actions to help your business come out of financial stress." If you continuously focus on the client's needs, your summary will be great.

The remainder of your profile is good. But, since you are new to Upwork, be sure to do the following:

Good luck!

Hello Kingsley,

I looked through your profile and it's good, but I have a couple of suggestions.

In your overview/summary, you provide a lot of good skill and background information, and talk about being a team player, but you never really focus on a potential client's needs. Clients expect to read about your skills and qualifications, but they really want to know how your skills/qualifications will benefit them. The first two sentences of your summary are important because the client sees them when searching for freelancers. You want those first two lines to be impactful, and hopefully the client is convinced to click and read your profile.

My suggestion is to, at a minimum, revise the first paragraph of your summary to make it more client-focused. You can accomplish this by telling clients exactly what you can provide. Clients are looking for results, and they're looking for a freelancer who can help them solve their problems. You want to offer them information as soon as possible in your summary. For example:

As a Full-Stack Developer with experience in Angular, .NET and .NET Core, I am well-versed in both front-end and back-end web development. I can build e-commerce stores, interactive and dynamic web applications, mobile apps, admin dashboards, and databases, and help businesses deliver these products more rapidly.

(Then, revise your second paragraph to be more client-focused.)

I have a solid background in back-end development using .NET and .NET Core. I can build robust web APIs, write controllers, and configure and secure your databases. My proficiency in C# and ASP.NET and experience with SQL Server and MongoDB allow me to effectively build, deploy, and manage highly scalable databases for your products, equipment or other materials.

(Then, revise your third paragraph to be more client-focused.)

I work closely with my clients and can integrate seamlessly with your existing technical teams to communicate and collaborate on projects. I am always looking for new ways to improve my coding skills and continuously learn new technologies, which allows me to enhance the features and functions of the apps and systems I build.

(The fourth paragraph is good.)

Your skills and portfolio look good, but I suggest adding short job descriptions for each job in your employment history.

Good luck!

Misbah,

You can ask freelancer related questions in the Freelancer's Forum. It stays active, so someone will respond to your questions there.

This forum is about profile reviews. I looked at your profile and you must make several changes and updates to reach 100% completion.

The first thing you should do is change your profile photo. The picture in your photo should be a close-up image of your head and shoulders that clearly shows your face; not a graphic or an avatar. Read through Upwork's best practices for How to Choose A Good Profile Picture.

Since you are new to Upwork, the best way to get started is to use available resources to build your profile and make sure it is 100% complete before applying to jobs. At a minimum, you should do the following:

Hi Similoluwa,

Welcome to Upwork.

The first thing I notice about your profile is that it is incomplete. Make sure your profile is 100% complete before applying to jobs.

You can start by revising your title. Upwork works best when a profile has synergy. Meaning, your title, overview/summary, skills, portfolilo, etc. should all work together to tell a story--your story. And to do that, you need to focus your title, summary, and skills on a specific skill area or occupration. Right now, your title says: Graphic, Editorial & Presentation Design | Digital Literacy, Literacy. The "Graphic, Editorial & Presentation Design" are related, but neither is related to "Digital Literacy."

So, you need to make your title specific. If you are a designer, you can say Graphic, Editorial & Presentation Designer. Then, if you also have experience with digital literacy and wish to provide digital literacy services here on Upwork, you can add a Specialized Profile that focuses specific on digital literacy. This way, when you apply to graphic/presentation design jobs, you send your graphic design profile. When you apply to digital literacy jobs, you can send your digital literacy profile.

Overview/Summary: Your summary needs to be changed completely. The information you have sounds like a copy/paste from a résumé. Some résumé material can be useful, but it needs to be revised to speak to clients, not employers. As a freelancer, you have to think of yourself as a business providing services to other businesses. You are not an employee looking for a job with an employer.

To make your summary more client-focused, do not tell clients that you are looking for a position. Instead, tell clients that you are an experienced graphic/presentation designer with ____ years of experience. Then, tell clients that you can build informative presentations that keeps audiences engaged, or that you design information management processes that streamline data collection and improve business operations.

The idea is this: if you tell clients that you have experience with something or you are good at something, follow-up by telling them why it matters to them.

Since you are new to Upwork, make sure your profile is 100% complete before applying to jobs. At a minimum, you should do the following:

Hello Naveed,

I looked through your profile and I think it's good. There are a few grammatical errors throughout your summary, but the errors are not terrible.

The only thing I would consider changing is your hourly rate. Rates are different worldwide, but I think a graphic designer with your experience should be between $18.00/hour - $20.00/hour. My observation is based on my own background, but specifically the experience of other graphic designers based in Pakistan. You should not increase your rate if you do not feel comfortable doing so, but I think your skillset says you are worth it.

Thank you so much for the detailed response, Clark!

I would like some one else as well to comment on the profile.

How do I do that?

Someone else might see this post and respond. However, you can always post a new message later and see if others respond.

Hello,

thank you.

Hi Kanwar,

There are seveal problems with your profile and you need to make changes to your title and summary.

First, your title contains unrelated skill areas. Academic writing is not the same as content writing or CV writing. If you are a blogger or web content specialist, then you can say you are a Content Writer. You should only say you are a CV Writer if you specialize in writing professional background documention or résumés. And, an Academic Writer specializes in scholarly writing for academic purposes like essays, arguments, research papers, reports, etc.

You need to decide which service you will offer to clients. If you offer all of them, you have to explain it. Use your summary to tell clients which writing services you provide and how your completed works will help them. Clients need to know what you can write and how it will benefit them.

Since you are new to Upwork, be sure to use available resources to make your profile the best it can be.

Please review my profile and provide feedback. I am definitely new to this site and trying to make sure I am doing all I can to set it up correctly and use it efficiently.

Thank you:)

Hello Muhammad,

With 8 jobs completed and 4 in-progress, you don't seem too new!

But I think your profile is in good shape. Your summary is a bit long and most clients probably don't read all of it, but I do not see any huge issues that would prevent clients from hiring you.

HI Ibiyemi,

I like the approach in your profile. I have a few suggestions that might help improve your title, summary, and skills list:

Title: Upwork usually recommends removing words like "superb" and "excellent" from your title. Those words are best used in your overview/summary.

Overview/Summary: Your summary contains good background/experience information. You also provide services information to potential clients, but I suggest the client-focused content be moved to the first paragraph. Why? The first two sentences of your summary are important because the client sees them when searching for freelancers. You want those first two lines to be impactful and contain words/phrases that help clients understand that you are the best freelancer who can help them reach their goal.

I think this can be achieved by simply moving your last paragraph to the top. Then, you can add another paragraph with more client-focus. For example:

I'm a highly experienced facilitator and creator/deliverer of superb training and business presentations and related documentation. I will help you to 'Wow!' your customers, clients, and business partners with unrivaled PowerPoint presentations. and engaging manuals. I will produce DFDs (Draft for Discussion), and based on your review, produce final documents to your specifications. Satisfaction guaranteed!

Your presentation is more than just a collection of slides; it’s an opportunity to tell a powerful story and connect with your audience. I will design an impactful presentation that engages your audience and gives them an outstanding experience.

With several decades of professional experience working in multinationals, I have developed a keen eye for detail, and understand how to engage diverse audiences. Regardless of purpose for your presentation, I will bring your message to life.

Let’s discuss your needs and how I can help.

Skills: You should add more skill categories to your skills list, but only if they are relevant to the services you provide. The biggest reason to update your skills categories is so clients can find you when they search for your specific skills, and so Upwork’s matching algorithms can better match you with relevant jobs.

Everything else looks good.

After you make these minor updates, start applying for jobs that match your qualifications by writing great cover letters. Write a custom cover letter based on the client's job:

1) Acknowledge the job you are applying for.
2) Highlight your qualifications.
3) Address specific points in the job by explaining how you can solve their problem
4) Request the client reach out to discuss or request an Upwork Zoom call to go through their requirements.

Good luck!

Hello my fellow freelancers, I am Naomi Kariuki. I have been on Upwork for a while and till now I have not yet gained a client. Some interviews yes but nothing past that. Kindly help me know if there is anything wrong with my profile. https://www.upwork.com/freelancers/~0120fb976213f53dd5

celgins

Hi Naomi,

You have good information in your profile, but I think you should revise the first part of your overview/summary to be more client-focused. Your second paragraph in your summary is great, but if we modify the first paragraph, it could say:

I'm an expert Executive Virtual Assistant with a marketing background and more than 5 years of experience in marketing and customer care. I help businesses with basic Social Media Management, Telemarketing, Cold-Calling, Email Management, Calendar Management, Scheduling Meetings, Data Entry, Proofreading, Travel and Accommodation Management, and Personal Assistance.

Also, remove the first line ("CAREER PROFILE SUMMARY") in your main profile summary and your Data Entry specialized profile summary. The first two sentences of your summary are important because the client sees them when searching for freelancers. You don't want to waste that space with unnecessary words.

The rest of your profile looks good. Just keep applying to jobs by writing great cover letters. Always create a custom cover letter based on the client's specific job requirements. Focus on the client's needs and requirements; highlight your qualifications; and tell the client how you will meet their needs. Hopefully, you will win some jobs soon!
