Sinda,

I looked through your profile and it lacks the information clients need to make a decision to hire you. Clients come to Upwork with specific needs and they look for freelancers who can meet those needs and get results. Your summary must tell potential clients which actuarial services you provide, how you can help them, and why they should choose you.

When reviewing each section of your profile:

Title: To start, you should create a more recognizable title. I suggest something like Actuary or Actuarial Scientist.

Overview/Summary: Use your summary to tell clients about your services, your experience, and how you can meet their needs or solve their problems. You can revise existing information to make it more client-focused like this:

Budding professional consultant with a scientific approach to problems, and a strong quantitative aptitude in actuarial techniques, financial mathematics and data science. I use math, statistics, and financial theory to assess financial risks and analyze the potential financial impact of events.

I have a refined understanding of financial management practices and experience in a wide array of techniques within tactical environments. I have enthusiastic about leveraging academic knowledge, analysis skills and strategic thinking to deliver optimal solutions to my clients.

(Now, add more information that gives clients insight into working with you. Providing this type of information will add value.)

  • Tell clients how you will communicate and gather feedback to ensure your final reports meet their needs.
  • Talk about how you can uphold ethical standards, protect a client's financial data, and use responsible practices for data collection and reporting.
  • Which data analysis and modeling tools or applications you are familiar with or use?
  • Mention your time management and organizational skills.
  • Highlight any similar projects you have worked on and your accomplishments.

Portfolio: Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Employment History: Add short job descriptions to each job in your employment history. A job description is especially important when the job is highly relevant to the services you provide on Upwork.

Good luck!

Hello Adebukola,

Your profile overview/summary will be more appealing if your use your skill area (Professional Scrum Master Certified) in your paragraph. For example:

Professional certified Scrum Master specializing in customer relationship management, project management, and process improvement.

The information in your summary sounds good and describes your skill set, but it's not enough. Clients looking for Agile software development services expect to read about your experience, details about your services, and your approach to meeting their needs. For example, it will help if you can:

  • Tell clients how you communicate and gather feedback to ensure the final deliverables meet their needs.
  • Mention that you stay informed of the latest developments, trends, and emerging technologies in customer relationship management.
  • Mention your time management and organizational skills.
  • Highlight any relevant projects you have worked on and your accomplishments.
  • Talk about your ability to meet business challenges and adapt to changing or new requirements if necessary.

Clients are looking for reasons to choose you and the information you provide can help them better understand why they should hire you and how it will benefit them.

Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

You should also consider adding a project catalog. The project catalog allows you to setup a pre-packaged service that clients can buy without you sending a proposal. Due to higher than usual requests for project catalogs, reviews and approvals are taking a minimum of 10 business days. Read Get Started With Project Catalog for more information.

Your skills, certifications, and employment history look great.

Way too much razzle-dazzle for my taste. Too many annoying icons and not enough sober information.

Hi Hema,

The first thing you should do is change your profile photo. The picture in your photo should be a close-up image of your head and shoulders that clearly shows your face. Read through Upwork's best practices for How to Choose A Good Profile Picture.

I recommend revising your overview/summary to speak to potential clients in a conversational tone. Meaning, you should uses sentences in paragraphs to tell clients about your services, your experience, and how you can help them. For example:

I am a professional Book Indexer with 9+years of experience providing book indexing services for STEM, scholarly, non-fiction, finance and other wide range of books. I can perform Subject index, Name index, Company index, Organization index, Author index, Bibliography index, and Para-Id index.

As a specialist in services like repagination (Page reflows), locator search, style editing and index tagging, I can create indexes with in-depth analysis of a text book based on author and publisher’s requirements. I have completed more than 350 books for major publishers like Wiley, Elsevier, Cengage, Laserwords, Springer Medical boutique, and others.

Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Add short job descriptions to each job in your employment history. The job description is especially important when a job is highly relevant to the services you provide on Upwork.

Good luck!

KiranKumar,

Make your title easier to read by adding spaces between the "|" and removing unnecessary words: QA Testing | Manual | Automation | SQL | Mobile App Testing

Your overview/summary should start with a sentence instead of a bullets. Clients can see the first 200-250 characters of your summary in search results, so you want to avoide bullets. Use sentences and paragraphs to create a conversational approach to your summary. For example:

Highly skilled QA Tester with 10 years of experience in testing services. I can conduct different levels of testing like interface testing, SAT, Smoke, Regressions, UAT, etc. I have provided QA testing in different domains including Insurance, Banking (Whole Sale Risk Management, Credit etc.)

Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Hello, I'm Mostafa. I'm new to Upwork. I'm currently struggling to find work. It would be much appreciated if you could review my profile and give me feedback.

Thanks.

Hello Mostafa,

Unfortunately, you are experiencing the same issues thousands (if not millions) of freelancers are facing. Many freelancers are struggling to find work on Upwork. Competition is high, there are fewer jobs listed these days, and other factors beyond our control (i.e., algorithm updates, other unknowns, etc.) contribute to the difficulties.

I looked through your profile and I like the information. I think your overview/summary should go a little further and offer clients a short overview of working with you. For example:

  • Tell clients how you communicate and gather feedback during the SDLC to ensure the final product meets their needs.
  • Do you provide unlimited revisions? Do you offer follow-up support after an app is built and the project is completed?
  • Talk about your ability to meet challenges and adapt to changing or new requirements if necessary.

There are thousands of software developers on Upwork. Clients need several good reasons to choose you. The information you provide can help them better understand why they should hire you and how it will benefit them.

Your skills list looks good, but I highly suggest adding Software Development since it is highly relevant to your work. We are only allowed 15 skills, so you will have to remove one to add Software Development. Upwork uses these skill categories to match you with relevant jobs, and to help your profile appear in search results when clients search for those skills.

Good luck!

I am new here and just starting the learning path. I noticed my profile has zero views. I have a strong background and great skills. What suggestions do you have? Thanks!

Larry,

Getting profile views can be a challenge. Competition is high in many niches and it's extremely high in WordPress development. The ratio of freelancers to jobs is ridiculously high, so it can be a while before you get meaningful views.

I looked through your profile and I think it looks good. However, since WordPress development is so popular and there are hundreds of thousands of developers here, I think you add more substance to your overview/summary. Anything that distinguishes you from other developers would be great. For example:

  • Tell clients how you communicate and gather feedback during a project to ensure the final product meets their needs. You must go beyond "Full project management from start to finish."
  • Do you provide unlimited revisions? Do you offer follow-up support after a web project is completed?
  • Highlight any similar projects you have worked on and your accomplishments.
  • Talk about your ability to meet business challenges and adapt to changing or new requirements if necessary.

Clients looking for WordPress developers and technical PMs will find them on Upwork. The question is, do they have enough good reasons to choose you? The information you provide can help them better understand why they should hire you and how it will benefit them.

As a developer or anyone in a technical profession, you must have a portfolio. Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

I think the rest of your profile looks good, but a little more info in your summary might help you stand out a little more.

Good luck!

Hello, I'm Vanessa Fredrick. Kindly review my profile. Thanks

Hello Vanessa,

I would normally suggest an administrative assistant add more details to their overview/summary, but shorter is better and your summary offers good information for clients.

I recommend capitalizing the first letter of each word in your title. Also, I recommend using Upwork's skill category Virtual Assistant instead of "administrative assistant." Using "virtual assistant" will be better for matching your profile with relevant jobs. You can also use a title like Virtual Assistant | Administrative Support.

Speaking of "administrative support," add the skill categoryAdministrative Support to your skills list. Upwork uses these skill categories to match you with relevant jobs, and to help your profile appear in search results when clients search for those skills. It helps when your title, summary, and skills list use the same words.

Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Good luck!

Hello!,

I have been trying to get my first upwork job for a long time now and I havent been able to get one that isn't a scam. Can you guys please take a look at my profile and tell me where I am going wrong?

https://www.upwork.com/freelancers/~01db7b164f9489d8b8

Thank you so much!,

Ember C

Ember,

There are a lot of great things in your profile, but it still needs to be much more assertive.

To say so, there are millions (1.5 million writers as of 2019) of freelancers on Upwork and many of them sound much more professional than you. You sound like you're giving it the old college try.

Upwork clilents are spending money on strangers on the Internet, so they want as close as possible to guaranteed results. They need to know you won't quit halfway through a project. They need to know you will deliver.

Professionals don't bother with "Hello." They start with "I am an expert editor and proofreader who can deliver the goods. With ______________ years of experience and _____________ training, I know my craft frontwards and backwards. I will get you publication ready copy on time ..."

I often say, pretend you've been doing this for 10 years. That's how confident you need to sound.

For example, you have the word "expert" as the 14th word in your profile.  In my sentence, "I am an expert __________" it's the fourth word. You have to put your profile on steroids. You have to ramp up.

You say you are well organized. But freelancers work alone and remotely, so who cares if you're organized? That doesn't help the client. It helps you.  Clients want to know how you're going to help them, not how organized your desk is.

You say "I am able to write, proofread and edit ..." Can't you be a bit more assertive than that? I am able ... doesn't sound like a lot of conviction, if you know what I mean.

Writer to writer, don't say "and much more!" If something is important, spell it out. If it's  not important, don't hint at something. That's just strong writing 101. Along with that, don't say "etc." That's the same thing. If there's more to be said, say so. If there isn't, let it go.

Also, don't say "due to my professionalism," instead list the work you've done. "I've worked on novels, academic papers, non-fiction, white papers and online content." That's the way to sound professional. Don't just claim things out of thin air.

Those are my thoughts. Follow through on those, you should have a much stronger profile.

Good luck.

Hello, I'm Soufiane Mouzakki.New in upwork Kindly review my profile. Best Regards

I feel you should mention the certifications you have acquired. Similarly, add up your previous works in the portfolio section which eventually shows you have the skills to perform specific tasks.

-Satyam

Mouzakki,

There are 12 million freelancers on Upwork, so if someone wants to find an expert at something  (voice over, web development, etc.) they can easily do so. If you try to post yourself  as available for four or five different things, clients will not think you are an expert at any of those skills. So, it's best to focus  on one thing, not four or five.

That said, you need to be a lot more convincing to be competetive.

Look at other profiles and see how the successful freelancers do it.

Greetings, everyone! Peace be upon your home!

Please help me with some advice. I've been working on a project for a year, now it's on hold but I'm having a hard time finding another job. Could this be due to the fact that I have not been an active user for a year? And how can I attract clients?

Thank you!
