UPDATE: Check out the new Get Profile Feedback board!

Getting started on Upwork can take a lot of work and focus. To help make this process a little easier, we’ve created this post where you can request feedback on your profile. The community is full of experienced Upwork freelancers who are passionate about helping others. These users will review your profile and provide feedback based on their experience.

If you’re interested in requesting help, make sure your profile visibility is not set to “Private” and then reply below.

We’re excited to see how Community members can continue to help each other to grow!

Note: A previous version of this post was closed as the number of responses made it difficult to read and navigate. If you had not received a response yet to a request you made, please post again in this thread.

Thank you!

Tkankyou

Maribel,

I like your profile, but the credibility is low.

That can be fixed. All you have to do is put in some details that increasse your credibility.

Here's what you wrote:

With over 5 years of experience as an administrative assistant, I'm detail-oriented, resourceful, assertive, and proactive, I can handle calendar management, travel arrangements, emails, lead generation and data entry, I'm a fast learner, and I'm familiar with effective tools commonly used for administrative jobs such as Gmail, Outlook, Google Sheets, Google Calendar, etc. I can adapt to any tools or applications that the company is currently using, Lastly, I guarantee proficient delivery ensure accurate and timely completion of the assigned tasks/projects."

Now, here's what you need to do, only don't use my words. I'm just using this as an example:

With over 5 years of experience as an administrative assistant, I'm detail-oriented, resourceful, assertive, and proactive. I have worked for retail companies and administrative offices at XYZ University. I can handle calendar management, travel arrangements, emails, lead generation and data entry, With ________ years of college and data entry training though online resources, I have discovered I am a fast learner.  and I'm familiar with administrative tools, such as Gmail, Outlook, Google Sheets, Google Calendar, which I used as an office assistant at ABC Incorporated. I can quickly adapt to any tools or applications that your project requires."

Do you see how adding those details makes your story more believable? Of course, I made up the details and you have to put in your own, but I'm just trying to tell you that those details will support your claims and make your story believable.

Finaly, don't say, "Lastlly, I guarantee proficient delivery ensure accurate and timely completion of the assigned tasks/projects."

Upwork already has a system by which clients are provided with adequate work .... and telling clients you guarantee something invites people to take advantage of you.

As I said, I like your profile, but it needs supportive details to sound more believable.

Good luck.

Anthony,

Thank you! Your comments on my profile are greatly appreciated and will be a great help to me.

Regards,

I hope your day is going well! I'd be happy to help review your profile. Just let me know where you have it posted  and I can take a look.

Anil,

Your profile overview/summary does not provide enough information to convince clients to hire you. If you are charging $150.00/hr, you must provide more details about your services and why clients should choose you. Clients come to Upwork with specific needs and they look for freelancers who can get results.

Instead of telling clients your passion for transforming testing/QA methods within a business, tell clients how you will do that to meet their needs. For example:

  • Tell clients about your QA management process, how you will communicate with them, and gather feedback to ensure their QA/testing methods meet their needs.
  • Mention that you stay informed of the latest developments, trends, and emerging technologies in test execution, testing frameworks, and test management.
  • Talk about how you can uphold ethical standards, protect proprietary data/information, and use responsible practices when managing a QA testing program.
  • Mention your time management and organizational skills.
  • Highlight any QA/testing management projects you have worked on and your accomplishments.
  • Talk about your ability to meet business challenges and adapt to changing or new requirements if necessary.

Clients are looking for reasons to choose you and the information you provide can help them better understand why they should hire you and how it will benefit them.

You should also add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Good luck!

Hello Andrea! I'm currently on the look for job here. I was wondering if you could take a look at my profile and let me know if it needs improvement. I hope you could give me a feedback as to how I can improve it and make it more visible to clients. Thanks!

Vanessa,

There's nothing wrong with your profile except that it isn't a profile. It's an advertisement. It's full of splashy icons that are pretty glaring and lists of skills you have, which are boring and usually ignored by readers. I barely skimmed through the lists. In fact, I took one look at them and ran for cover.

A profile is expected to be a profile -- a narrative about yourself. "I am an expert _____________ with ____________ (training) and _____________ (work experience), who can ___________________ (fix your problem(s)). You will _______________ (love my work / earn more money / have more time to concentrated on other things / have more visitors to your website / increase your brand awareness, etc.).

If you write a narrative, people will actually read it. They will get to know you a little bit. They will remember it better, because you put your details into a story-setting.

Anyway, like I said, there's nothing wrong with your profile, except it's not a profile. It's an advertisement, churned out by AI -- and what does AI really know about who you are? Not much, it turns out.

Good luck.

Hello Raduwan,

I'm not sure if the beginning of your overview/summary was exactly the same since the last review on 7 March 2024, but I recommend removing the HIRE ME NOW emojis. Most clients I have talked to do not like directions like "hire me now" and "Just click the "Invite to job" button. Clients know who they want to hire and can easily find the Invite and Hire buttons. The directions given might be a turn-off for many clients.

Good luck!

Hi Clark,

Thank you for remembering. Yes 1st portion of the overview is changed. I'm testing which workers best. I'm just trying to add a strong hook. I have added based on how it will show in search. The previous overview is still present in the "SEO" work section.

Clark can you please give it a check again and let me know your thought?

Appreciate you Clark.

Hi everyone,

I hope you're all doing well. I'm reaching out to request feedback on my Upwork profile. I'm currently working towards establishing myself as a software engineer on the platform, and I believe that constructive feedback from experienced freelancers like yourselves would be incredibly valuable in helping me achieve that goal.

Here's the link to my profile: Upwork Profile.

I would greatly appreciate any insights, suggestions, or tips you might have to offer. Thank you in advance for taking the time to review my profile!

Best regards,
Najmul H. Bappy

Hi Najmul,

Your profile overview/summary sounds good, but here is something to remember: When clients search for freelancers, only the first 200-250 characters of your summary are shown. This means you have very little space (approximately two short sentences) to get their attention. You might want to use the first two sentences to tell clients how you can help them (your services).

Be more specific when using words like "development." For example: "With 4 years of overall software development experience..." This keep important keywords and keyphrases in your summary and specifies the type of development you do (software development) rather than other types of development.

You should add Software Development as a skill category to your skills list since software development is highly relevant to your work. Upwork uses these skill categories to match you with relevant jobs, and to help your profile appear in search results when clients search for those skills.

You may want to add a Specialized Profile since having a specialized profile can help increase a freelancer's searchability.

You should also consider adding a project catalog. The project catalog allows you to setup a pre-packaged service that clients can buy without you sending a proposal. Due to higher than usual requests for project catalogs, reviews and approvals are taking a minimum of 10 business days. Read Get Started With Project Catalog for more information.

Good luck!

Waseem,

Andrea is an Upwork Moderator. The moderators provide valuable information to freelancers and moderate the forums, but they do not provide profile reviews. Other freelancers offer to review profiles and provide feedback.

Here are a few things in your profile I recommend updating:

1) Capitalize the first letter of each word in your title; this will help it stand out: 3D Modeling | 3D Animation | 3D Rendering | Blender

2) Remove the word "INTRODUCTION" and "My name is Waseem Akram" from your overview/summary. Why? Because only the first two sentences of your summary are shown to clients when they search for freelancers. This means you have very little space (approximately 200-250 characters) to get their attention. You want clients to see their goals (your services) in this small space--not headings and names.

Everything else looks good.

Here are a few resources with tips for getting jobs on Upwork:

While updating a profile is important, your cover letters are also important since most freelancers must submit proposals to win jobs. Make sure the first two sentences of your cover letters speak to the client's specific job goals.

Good luck!

Hi Upwork Community! I'm seeking feedback on my Upwork profile. Any suggestions to improve and attract more clients would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! 🙏

https://www.upwork.com/freelancers/imtinanf

Imtinan,

Your profile is pretty good, but can you do better than "seasoned." in your opening sentence? "Seasoned is an over-used adjective around here. It sounds pretty unexiting even in the best of times.

Your last sentence, saying you aim to "exceed expectations" is also very drab and over-used. You sound like everybody else and you don't want to do that.

Every worker in the world from a short-order cook to the CEO of a company tries to "exceed expectatons." It's just not very useful information.

What would be useful is you saying more about your service. What other jobs have you done? What happened with those jobs? Did the clients gain anything?

Do you  have a range of styles that you use? Do you you collaborate with others to get the job done?

You leave out so much, I think you can certainly do better than that tired, old promise of "exceed expectations."

Try a litte harder.

Good luck.

Robert,

The answers to questions 1 through 5 are, no.

The first thing you should do is change your profile photo. The picture in your photo should be a close-up image of your head and shoulders that clearly shows your face. Read through Upwork's best practices for How to Choose A Good Profile Picture.

Since you are new to Upwork, make sure your profile is 100% complete before applying to jobs. The best way to complete your profile is to go through the following Academy Courses and other resources:

Hi Dominique,

Good start to your profile. Your overview/summary immediately reveals your services (i.e., sales, lead generation, appointment setting, cold calling/emailing, etc.) and you include great accomplishments. Now, you can enhance your summary by giving a few examples of how you can help clients. For example:

With a proven track record of success, l am an accomplished B2B & B2C sales professional with 10 years of success in sales, lead generation, appointment setting, cold calling/emailing and driving growth in diverse industries. I can help you identify and attract potential customers who show interest in your products or services, and convert them into qualified leads.

I have consistently ranked in the top performers due to my unique consultative selling style and strong closing skills. How do I accomplish this?

Accomplishments:

(...)

You can change the words to fit your own style, but you get the general idea--let clients know how you can apply your skills and expertise to help them.

Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Hello Angelica,

I think your profile makes a good start. There is enough information in your overview/summary for clients to understand how you can help them. You can probably enhance your summary by adding a few more qualities like:

  • Talk about your typing speed, accuracy, attention to detail, and how you can maintain quality standards.
  • Mention your time management and organizational skills.
  • Also, tell clients you have the ability to solve administrative problems and adapt to changing or new requirements if necessary.

There are hundreds of thousands of data entry specialists and virtual assistants on Upwork, so clients need several reasons to choose you.

Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Your skills list and employment history look good.

Good luck!

I'm very new to Upwork and have finally finished out all of the parts on the recommendations checklist.  I'd LOVE some feedback from others far more seasoned to the peculiarities of Upwork to shower their wisdom upon me.

Thanks, in advance: https://www.upwork.com/freelancers/processagilist

David,

OK, finally, a full-blown consultant who knows what the heck it is to be a consultant with a specific set of skills and predictable benefits you can foresee your clients gaining. A real consultant. I didn't know they existed anymore.

So, your write up is excellent, but could use some improvements. This is Upwork. You get pretty wordy, especially towards the end. And, then, the opening line could use some help, as well.

What do I mean? Simple. I think your opening line should be more down to Earth. You thrive on jargon and actually skim along the edge of that very well, but jargon is jargon. Can you get the opening to be more, "I'm an expert _________ who  can help you streamline operations." Something simple?

Then, you have some places that are just too wordy. I count one sentence that's 43 words long. That's kind of a tell ... is that sentence really necessary?

Where I think you could just slash and burn starts here: "My breadth of leadership, management, development and automation experience are a unique combination that allow me to not just solve the problem at hand, but to do so in a manner that scales without requiring a team of programmers to keep things running. (43 words, right there.) I am more than a developer and more than a leader. I am an entrepreneurial consultant with the a wealth of experience at my disposal across the entire organization."

I can re-write that in 20 words. "As an accomplished business expert, I can streamline simple and complex operations indepentently, without a team of programmers that increase your costs." Trade-off: 71 words, now 22 words.

Moreover, that's the paragraph where the solid information turns to fluff. I don't think you need anythng from that paragraph south. "I get enough corporate shennanigans from other channels." Or "I've been married for 25 years and have no idea how it works ..."  All unhelpful.

Stick to solid information that
people need to make the decision on whom they should hire. "Companies I have worked with have reduced costs 5-20 percent." Or, "I've helped companies reduce work loads by as much as 30 percent." Of course, I'm out of my league, but you get the idea.

One other thing that I saw missing was the names of some of the companies you've helped out. If you don't like giving out names, can you be a bit more specific? "I've helped retail chains, high-tech start ups and mid-to-large manufacturing concerns."

Oh, by the way, excellent introductory video.

And ... oops ... at some point you start talking about "teams." This is up to you, but people likle to know what they are getting for their money and what they are  getting into. Maybe you need to explain that a bit more. Who are these teams? Do you hire people to help you or does the company do that? Maybe I'm just a bit stupid here, but it was kind of a curveball for me.

That said, the profile is not where you close the deal. It's only something to help clients decided to talk to you. So, if you wade into stuff too deeply, you risk confusing your clients before it's time. If explaining how teams fit into the scheme of things is too strange, wait. When you get to the discussion stage, you can ease people into that kind of thing.

Good luck.

Great stuff, Anthony!  I really appreciate the amount of effort that you put into your analysis.

All of my excuses for verbosity aside, I do have a tendency to be too wordy.  In person, in mail, when speaking... so, that's real and something I can certainly work on.  I appreciate your kindness in the delivery and your specific suggestions.

The next point was rather interesting... I've heard explicitly contradictory feedback about my final paragraph.  Specifically, "that's who you really are... anyone can hire a programmer, but your personality in that last paragraph is what makes you stand out." (paraphrasing)... So, I'm going to run with it and see where that goes.

I'll certainly experiment over time, and see if I can do some split-testing at $2.70 a proposal, and adjust accordingly.

I'll work on the "% gains" stuff.  A point I well know just didn't do. <insert excuse here>
Specificity: Great point - I'll point out the industries and sizes as you suggested.

Glad you like the video.  I felt like I was a bit stiff in my delivery, so I was going to redo it.

Teams: Team leadership and culture creation is a core differentiator of mine, but I guess people here aren't looking for that so much. Vying for a "Chief Workflow Officer" fractional or interim leader, the idea was that clients would want me to bring on people to carry on and keep things running.  That's probably more likely in the $100MM companies than the mom & pops working through Upwork -- so, probably not as relevant to this audience.  A great reality check -- I'm used to a different target persona and my old patter came out.  I'll kill the "teams" thing and let "lead my folks" be a tomorrow question after I get my foot in the door.

All-in-all -- I appreciate it a ton Anthony!  The Upwork community is certainly better for having you as part of it.

Hello Mohamed,

I see good information throughout your profile, but I want to focus on your overview/summary. More specifically, I highly recommend removing these:

"Hi there!"

"I'm Gouda"

Why? Because when clients search for freelancers, only the first 200-250 characters of your summary are shown. This means you have very little space to get their attention. You want clients to see their goals (your services) in this small space, and you waste space with greetings and names.

In your second paragraph, use a conversational tone to tell clients about your skill set and how you can use your skills to meet their needs. For example:

I use Python for data manipulation, ETL pipeline development, and automation. I am highly proficient in SQL (PostgreSQL, MySQL), MongoDB, and Microsoft Excel, which I use for efficient data querying and analysis. I am also skilled in business intelligence methodologies and tools like PowerBI, ensuring actionable insights are delivered to stakeholders.

You may want to add a Specialized Profile. Having a specialized profile can help increase a freelancer's searchability.

Your portfolio, skills, certifications, and employment history look good.

Hello everyone!

It's very nice to meet you.

I am back on upwork after 1,5 year of break, and I fell like I need to get some support and advice form community to get back on track and sucesfully find new clients.

I am graphic designer, art director and sometimes illustrator, and I would be very gratefull if you could check my profile and give me some advices about my portfolio, descriptions and any other elements that can be presented in better way 🙂

https://www.upwork.com/freelancers/~01bb8aae6d18271b6e?mp_source=share

Thank you in advance!

Angelika,

Congratulations on all your awards, but your profile is too long and too wordy. Your writing style is somewhat casual, which is fine for some things, but a profile should be tighter. Also, you wrote a few lists and those are almost never read by anybody.

Your job title is an example of where you are very wordy. The job title should be two or three words -- very pithy. Get right to it. "Expert Graphic Designer."

The job title should invite people to read your write-up, so it should be very short. You don't want people to get stuck reading your job title. You want them to see it and skip right down to your write-up.

Having said all that, I recommend you find an editor. There is nothing really wrong with your profile, but  many things could be fixed. For example, you write a nice paragraph or two, then write lists, then cut and paste some quotes from your reviews. Right under that are your reviews, so why did you cut and paste reviews and put them right next to your reviews?

Obviousy, you should put those cut and pasted reviews on top of your write-up, not the bottom. But you should also edit them down, so they aren't so wordy.

Simillarly, if you used a narrative form, you wouldn't have to list every single award you've ever gotten. Just list two or three of the most impressive ones, then say, "and several others." Nobody is really going to read that list of awards.

I would also recommend you not use lists at all. Put everything in a narrative format.

Lastly, you don't have any image samples in your porfolio. Those are expected. You should have at least three, but up to six or so would be OK. Try to show different styles that you can do.

Those are my thoughts. If you want, send me a note and I'll edit that for you. But it will take a little effort helping get it the way you want it. Think about it.

Good luck.

Anthony, thank You for very detailed feedback, I will look into your advices for sure.

However, I am very suprised that You mantioned that I do not have any images in my portfolio.

"Lastly, you don't have any image samples in your porfolio. Those are expected. You should have at least three, but up to six or so would be OK. Try to show different styles that you can do. "

I have already 26 projects, all of them completed with images, that represent wide spectrum of my skills. I am worried now, that there is some technical mistake with my profile, and my project samples are not visible for the wievers. Would You be so kind, to check one more time, and let me know if you really cannot see any images in my portfolio? Thanks!

Angelika,

Stupid me. I just didn't scroll down far enough. (Oops.)
