Surya,

Overall, I think your profile looks good. Your overview/summary has good information, but the first part of the second paragraph is mostly a repeat of your first paragraph. I would remove the following:

"My Profile:"

"I am a highly skilled Data Analytics Specialist with a passion for turning complex data into understandable, valuable information."

Also, I recommend adding more items to your portfolio. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression and clients will expect more samples from a data analyst. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

You might want to change your Data Visualization specialized profile to a Graphic Design specialized profile since the content of that specialized profile focuses on graphic design.

Your skills, project catalog, and certification look great.

Good luck!

Hello,

Greetings!

Kindly review my profile, I am unable to make it public though.

Paulo Onate

Paulo,

That's a very random, not very credible write-up. It isn't really a write-up at all. It's just a series of lists.

Most people don't read lists. They are boring. They don't reveal anything about you.

Write a narrative instead. "I am an expert ________________ who can help you __________________________."

Then keep going in the narrative style.

The other thing your lists do not provide is any sense of your background. Where have you worked? Where did you go to school? What did you study in school? What kind of work have you done that helped you become good at data entry?

Provide those kinds of stories and your claims will be more believable.

Good luck.

Hello Kashif,

Your profile does not have enough information to convince clients to hire you. To make your profile more appealing to clients, provide more information in your overview/summary, add more relevant skills, and add a portfolio. Clients come to Upwork with specific needs and they look for freelancers who can get results.

Use your overview/summary to give clients examples of your project management approach:

  • Tell clients how you communicate and gather feedback during a project to ensure the final product meets their needs.
  • Talk about your attention to detail and how you maintain quality standards.
  • Do you provide unlimited revisions? Do you offer follow-up support after a web project is completed?
  • Mention your time management and organizational skills.
  • Highlight one or two projects you have worked on and your accomplishments.
  • Talk about your ability to meet business challenges and adapt to changing or new requirements if necessary.

There are thousands of full-stack developers on Upwork. You must give potential clients enough good reasons to choose you. The information you provide can help them better understand why they should hire you and how it will benefit them.

Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Add Full-Stack Development to your skills list since it's highly relevant to your work. Upwork uses these skill categories to match you with relevant jobs, and to help your profile appear in search results when clients search for those skills.

James,

You need to provide more information in your overview/summary to convince clients to hire you. There are hundreds of thousands (probabaly 1 million) data entry professionals on Upwork and you have to give potential clients several reasons to choose you.

Use a first-person point of view when writing your summary:

Data-driven professional, interpreting, and entering data electronically with a high degree of detail and accuracy. I can manage multiple data sources to decide on the best selection while identifying inconsistencies. I operate at an accelerated, iterative pace in a dynamic environment working on various tasks simultaneously, while adhering to strict deadlines & maintaining a high level of customer service.

In addition to telling clients about your services, tell them about your approach to providing those services and why your method is beneficial to them:

  • Talk about your typing speed, accuracy, attention to detail, and how you maintain quality standards.
  • Also talk about your time management and organizational skills.
  • Which software applications and tools are you familiar with?
  • Talk about your ability to solve administrative problems and adapt to changing or new requirements if necessary.

Select skill categories for each item in your portfolio. These categories are similar to those in your skills list. Adding skill categories to your portfolio items can help Upwork match you with relevant jobs, and help your profile appear in search results when clients search for those skills.

If the information in your employment history is not a specific job you held where you were paid, you should remove it. There should only be a job title, employer name, and job description there.

The biggest improvement you can make is your summary. Once you provide more details, clients will have a better understanding of your services and how you can meet their needs or solve their problems.

Good luck!

Hossain,

The first thing you should do is change your profile photo. The picture in your photo should be a close-up image of your head and shoulders that clearly shows your face. Removing the graphical background is also preferred. Read through Upwork's best practices for How to Choose A Good Profile Picture.

I suggest removing the following: "Hi there! I'm Hossain Ahmed" from your overview/summary. Why? Because when clients search for freelancers, only the first 200-250 characters of your summary are shown. This means you have very little space (approximately two short sentences) to get their attention. You want this small space to include important words (your services and experience)--not greetings and your name.

Good luck!

Hi everyone!

Would someone kindly take a look at my profile to see what improvements can be made? I'm in the marketing field where I do a little bit of everything -- Voiceover, videography, graphic design, social media management, etc.

I've been in the industry for several years, but I'm still relatively new to freelancing. I've gotten a few jobs and asked the clients for reviews, but so far I have not received any despite leaving reviews for them after the job is completed.

Any constructive criticism or insight into the best practices of an UpWork profile is greatly appreciated. I really value your input!

Thank you in advance,

Cody

Hi Cody,

I like the information in your profile. Believe me when I say I totally understand the benefits, demands, and drawbacks of being a jack-of-all trades. Here's the thing: clients sometimes look for "jacks" and "jills," but probably look for specialists or subject matter experts even more.

Your skills in voice acting, graphic design, writing, and social media management are probably great, but your profile overview/summary might not provide enough detail for each skill area to convince clients to hire you for that particular skill. For example, clients often look for examples of your graphic design expertise (e.g., "I create high-quality vector art, posters, thumbnails, logos, infographics, and character designs for my clients."). The same is often desired for other skill areas like voice acting: (e.g. "I create voiceovers for commercials, explainer videos, animation, product pitches, and video sales letters using an American English accent.")

Additionally, clients are spending money and they want to maximize their spend. This means, clients often go beyond skills and want to know more about your work process. For graphic design, you can add more details like:

  • How you communicate and gather feedback during a design project to ensure the final product meets their needs.
  • Your attention to detail and how you maintain quality standards.
  • Do you provide unlimited revisions? Do you offer follow-up support after a design is completed?
  • Highlight similar projects you have worked on and your accomplishments.
  • Talk about your ability to meet business challenges and adapt to changing or new requirements if necessary.

Similar details can accompany your voice over and social media management services.

I think the other sections of your profile look good. The biggest thing is giving clients enough information for your various skills to convince them you're the guy they want to hire.

You should also consider adding a project catalog. The project catalog allows you to setup a pre-packaged service that clients can buy without you sending a proposal. Due to higher than usual requests for project catalogs, reviews and approvals are taking a minimum of 10 business days. Read Get Started With Project Catalog for more information.

Good luck!

Hello,

I am CA Finalist and Microsoft Excel & Word Expert having 3.5 years experience of working with well know clients.I made Upwork account on 29 Feb 2024. My profile is 100% complete.I have also created two Specialized profiles in addition to General profile.
I have made total 6 proposals till now.out of which only 2 viewed by client.
Kindly Review my Profile. I am not sure where I am lacking. I try my best to write proposal relevant to the job.
Need your Advice and Suggestions please. It's getting very difficult for me to get the 1st Order.

Thanks and Regards

Hasnain,

Two viewed out of six proposals is good; many freelancers get no views after sending six proposals.

Overall, I think your profile looks good. However, some clients may not know what a "CA Finalist" is, so you might want to explain. The rest of your overview/summary looks fine.

If possible, you might want to change your portfolio Word documents to PDF files so your portfolio thumbnails. This is more attractive (if your PDF files have graphics on the cover page) than the text currently shown in the thumbnail, and graphics in a portfolio get more attention than text.

Good luck!

Hello Mariam,

I looke through your profile and I see a few things you can improve. By section:

Title: Correct the spelling, remove the trailing "|" and capitalize the first letter of each word in your title; this will help it stand out:  Medical technologiestTechnologist | Medical Research Writer | Literature Review

Overview/Summary: One way you can optimize the beginning of your profiel overview/summary is to eliminate unnecessary text. For example, I suggest removing the following:

"Professional Summary:"

"Dedicated and Detail-Oriented Medical Research Writer"

Why? Because when clients search for freelancers, only the first 200-250 characters of your summary are shown. This means you have very little space (approximately two short sentences) to get their attention. You want clients to see their goals (your services) in this small space--not headings or repeated skill areas from your title. The rest of your summary looks good.

Your portfolio, skills list, and certifications look good.

In your Article & Blog Writing specialized profile, remove "$30.00/hr" from your summary.

Project Catalog: You should also consider adding a project catalog. The project catalog allows you to setup a pre-packaged service that clients can buy without you sending a proposal. Due to higher than usual requests for project catalogs, reviews and approvals are taking a minimum of 10 business days. Read Get Started With Project Catalog for more information.

Liban,

I think your profile looks good. Your overview/summary does a good job of describing your services, skills, and why clients should choose you. Your portfolio and certification look good too.

I have only three suggestions:

1) You are missing two important skill categories in your skills list. You use both Web Scraping and Django in your title and both should also appear in your skills list. Upwork looks for synergy between your title, summary, skills and other sections. Upwork uses these skill categories to match you with relevant jobs, and to help your profile appear in search results when clients search for those skills.

2) Add short job descriptions to each job in your employment history. A job description is especially important when the job is highly relevant to the services you provide on Upwork. Upwork uses keywords in job titles and descriptions to match you with relevant jobs.

3) Consider adding one or two Specialized Profiles. Having a specialized profile can help increase a freelancer's searchability.

Good luck!

Hello all! I would appreciate any feedback to improve my profile.

Thank you!

Lee

Lee,

Welcome.

A lot of your profile is very pointed and just what the doctor ordered. But I'm kind of the company curmedgeon -- the toughest grader around here. But there's a bunch of good stuff here, so don't despair.

Anyway, first an overview. Freelancers are expected to be masters or experts at something, really the go-to person if you have a specific problem. That's old school, but we're stuck with it. So, as it happens, freelancing at three different things at once -- curriculum development, education presentation and grant writing -- is not traditionally kosher. It's not impossible, but there is a whole lot of competition out there (millions on Upwork alone), which pushes further towards specialization. For example, if you just did grant writing and worked at that night and day (hyperbole time) you really would become an expert, the absolute got-you-covered grant writer who could sell pigeons to the Bronx borough president. You'd be sought after. In shorthand, expertise is the name of the game 'round here, bucko.

However, I do many profile reviews and I do not see that many grant writers and relatively few curriculum developers, so you might give the two-barrel approach a shot. See what happens. Three? Maybe.

Regardless, your job title should be shorter. It's just a title. It should point people towards the write-up. Education Expert / Grant Writer. Four words is better than six. Get them to come to you. Remember Hemmingway? Less is more.

Then, I'm really stunned you didn't write this yourself in the first person. I'm a meta-communications nutcase and this immediately says you weren't up for the task. Minus one point.

Before I forget, "expert" or a facimile should be your third word if possible. "I am an expert __________, who can __________." In your case, you have "expertise" in sentence three. Make it much higher.

Just pointing this out, but you have "Lee is a semi-retired educator with a wealth of experience ..." Your first descriptor is that you're semi-retired. But nobody says, "I gotta find a grant writer who is semi-retired." (I might be wrong about that, but I doubt it.) There also isn't that much need to say you  have a passion for what you do. It's a conversational thing to say, but that belongs at the bottom of the write up, not sentence two. (What people want to know is what you can do and what the benefits might be. Passionate doesn't really meet that standard, although it's not the wrong thing to say.)

With that in mind, the rest of your write-up is great. People will surely want to know that you have spent ten years honing your skillls and that you have rigorous standards and you have experience grant writing for educational purposes. All that is terrific. I should have started with that.

People will also want to know that others have recognized you for your work. This is all good. Good stuff to know. "I am known for my collaborative approach (I changed to first person for you) is also great. Pointing out that others recognize your talents is a fine way of saying all this.

Then, I see you said you have a passion for this at the last sentence. I like that. That's where that belongs.

"I am an expert grant writer focused on educational programming who is dedicated to the task of inspiring and empowering students through well-funded opportunities. With ten years of experience in grant writing and curriculum development with many successes behind me, I can work with your team to consruct substantial and inspiring funding proposals that directly targets resource priorities, increasing your chances of converting an application to an award."

Anyway, I'm just winging it ... tell them you're an expert at something, then tell them what you can make happen (you can increase their chances of getting an award).

I like the tone of your write-up. I'm just tossing out ideas to see what might resonate ... just one opinion. Hope it helps.

Good luck.

Hello Namhla,

Welcome to Upwork. Getting started here can feel a bit complicated, but navigating and using the site will become easier over time.

Here is what I see in your profile:

Title: Your title is good, but I recommend removing "skilled in" and only using skill areas: Entrepreneurial Project Manager | SAP, Salesforce and Tableau. This creates a more streamlined title that only focuses on the keywords clients want to see.

Overview/Summary: Your summary makes a good start and has good information. However, there is not enough detail to convince clients to hire you. Clients will find thousands of project managers here and they often look beyond your skills to determine if you are a good fit. You can give potential clients more reasons to hire you as a project manager by including information like:

  • You mention the guarantee of "full project management service," but managing a client's project is the most important service you can provide. With that, clients will want a few more details about how you can manage a project. Tell clients how you will communicate with them during each phase to ensure the scope, objectives, and deliverables are clearly defined and successful.
  • Mention that you stay informed of the latest developments, trends, and emerging technologies in project management and how that benefits clients.
  • Since timing is important for any project, mention your time management and organizational skills.
  • Talk about your ability to meet business challenges and adapt to changing or new requirements if necessary.

Skills: Since you use SAP, Salesforce and Tableau in your title, you should add them to your skills list. Upwork looks for synergy between the skills in your title, summary, skills list and other areas. The skill categories in your skills list are used to match you with relevant jobs, and to help your profile appear in search results when clients search for those skills.

Your portfolio looks good and your employment history is great.

If possible, you should create a Specialized Profile that focus on more specific project management services or unrelated services you can provide on Upwork. Having a specialized profile can help increase a freelancer's searchability.

Good luck!

Hi Upwork team,

I am new to Upwork,

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions, or tips to improve my profile.  Thank you in advance for taking the time to review my profile!

Best regards,

Mandy

Mandy,

I don't see anything wrong with your profile, except the rate is way too low. You've been doing this for 25 years; you should post a rate much higher than $4 per hour.

The thing is, the rate is not what you get when you negotiate a job on Upwork. The clients set the rates and you can set yours, but that doesn't always come into play. Regardless, the rate you post shows how confident you are and if you post a rate of $4 per hour, you are telling people you are not very conficent in what you do.

Look around Upwork and find other data entry profiles. See what they charge. Then post a rate that is near the middle, but slightly higher.

Good luck.

Hi Adnan,

The first thing you should do is change your profile photo. The picture in your photo should be a close-up image of your head and shoulders that clearly shows your face. The picture should not be a graphic, avatar, or anything that does not show your face. Read through Upwork's best practices for How to Choose A Good Profile Picture.

I recommend removing the emojis from the first sentence of your overview/summary. Why? Because when clients search for freelancers, only the first 200-250 characters of your summary are shown. This means you have very little space to get their attention. You want clients to see your services in this small space; you don not want to waste any space with emojis or unnecessary words.

Add a portfolio to show samples of previous work or to demonstrate your skills. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Since you use "full stack developer" in your title, you should try to add it to your skills list. We are allowed only 15 skills, so you will have to remove one to add Full-Stack Development.

Also consider adding a Specialized Profile that focuses on more specific full-stack development services or services completely unrelated to full-stack development. Having a specialized profile can help increase a freelancer's searchability.

Good luck!

Victor,

Getting jobs on Upwork can take time. Once you improve your profile, focus on sending quality proposals/cover letters to jobs that match your skills and qualifications. Hopefully, you will win your first job soon.

celgins
Community Member

Victor,

Other freelancers cannot help you get jobs on Upwork.

I recommend refocusing your title by using "virtual assistance" first and capitalizing the first letter of each skill area; this will help your title stand out a little more: Virtual Assistant | Digital Marketing | Data Entry

The information in your overview/summary sounds good, but you need more details to convince clients to hire you. For example:

  • In addition to telling clients about your services, tell them about your approach to providing those services and why your method is beneficial to them.
  • Talk about your typing speed, accuracy, attention to detail, and maintaining quality standards.
  • Also talk about your time management and organizational skills.
  • Which software applications and tools you are familiar with (e.g., Microsoft Office, Slack, Asana, etc.)?
  • Talk about your ability to solve administrative problems and adapt to changing or new requirements if necessary.

You are competing with hundreds of thousands of virtual assistants, so clients need several reasons to choose you.

Add more data entry and virtual assistance items to your portfolio. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Add short job descriptions to each job in your employment history. A job description is especially important when the job is highly relevant to the services you provide on Upwork. Upwork uses keywords in job titles and descriptions to match you with relevant jobs.

Good luck!

Hi Md Abu,

Members of the Upwork team (Moderators and Community Managers) provide valuable information to freelancers and moderate the forums, but they do not provide profile reviews. Other freelancers offer to review profiles and provide feedback.

I looked through your profile and I have a few suggestions regarding your overview/summary:

Remove the following:

"Hi there,"

"I am Sayem."

Why? Because when clients search for freelancers, only the first 200-250 characters of your summary are shown. This means you have very little space (approximately two short sentences) to get their attention. You do not want to waste this small space on greetings and your name--clients can already see your name on your profile.

Also, do not start your summary by mentioning your goals: "My current goals are to continue to provide..." Even if your goal is to provide a service, it sounds like you are focusing on yourself and not clients. You can make the first part of your summary more client-focused by changing a few words to tell clients how you can help them. For example:

I am a professional Photo Editor and Graphic Designer using Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop for high-quality clipping path, background removal, photo retouching and logo design. I can create logos for branding, business cards, flyers, posters, brochures, stationary, website banners, illustrations, signage, and motion graphics.

I have extensive experience in photo editing and graphic design, and I'm a hard-working and relentless worker.

(...)

The other areas of your profile look good.

Good luck!

Hello, I'm Jesús, a very proud Mexican, I love my country.

I am new here, I have had many, many conflicts to configure the account, unfortunately the complete procedure to have the profile 100% is quite obscure and not at all clear, but not the procedure for purchasing CONNECTS (without seeming to complain).

Anyway, I will continue trying to get my first contract.

A hug.

J Jesus,

The first thing you should do is look through a dozen, two dozen, three dozen Upwork profiles. Look for profiles of folks who have done well -- earned some money, gotten good reviews, have a high job success score.

There is such a wide discrepency between your profile and a great one that you need to give reviewers less to do. It would take five pages to describe what you need to know. It would be quicker if you just did your homework and researched the profile format and learned from that. Once you write something worth reviewing we would be pleased to help you out.

You'll catch on quick. It isn't rocket science and there are many great examples out there that would put you on the right track.

Abdullah,

Freelancers often must send many proposals before getting jobs. There is no trick to making a profile more attractive to win jobs; winning jobs often depends on how convincing your proposals are and whether clients believe you have the skills and qualifications to meet their needs.

In addition to the information I mentioned before and the review Anthony provided on 14 March, I recommend removing the greeting and your name from the first part of your overview/summary:

"Hi,"

"I am Abdullah Khan."

When clients search for freelancers, only the first 200-250 characters of your summary are shown. This means you have very little space (approximately two short sentences) to get their attention. You want clients to see their goals (your services) in this small space--not greetings and names.

I recommend removing the last few sentences in the last paragraph:

"By the way, I recently made an upwork profile so that's it seems to be an unprofessional profile. so I can say give me your designs/project and I will show you my skills and inspire you with my skills."

This will provide no value to clients. It might be best to end your summary with a different action like:

"Why choose me? I am highly organized and focused on timeliness and quality. I have strong organizational skills with proven success managing multiple projects. When you are ready to start, I am available for a video call through Upwork to discuss your projects and how I can help."

Your portfolio, skills list, and project catalog look good.
