Kenya: VAT

 

Upwork collects and remits value-added tax (VAT) to the Kenyan government as required by law. Providing a VAT ID is optional and doesn't exempt you from paying the tax. You can enter your VAT ID by visiting Settings and then selecting Tax InformationKenya offers tax exemption if you have a valid tax exemption certificate. Contact Upwork Support to provide a tax exemption certificate for our review.

 

We are required to assess a 16% tax on these services:

 

Freelancers
  • • Membership fees, including Freelancer Plus
  • • Connects purchases
  • • Freelancer service fees
Clients
  • • Marketplace, payment processing, and contract initiation fees
  • • Enterprise subscription, billing, and service fees
  • • Any Hire client fees

If you change locations in your account settings, your VAT will be adjusted accordingly. You can update your location by visiting Settings and then selecting Contact Info.
