I'm brand new to Upwork, as of a few hours ago. Can you please let me know if I'm on the right track?

Thanks so much! ๐Ÿ™‚

Coral,

You are on the right track, but I have a few suggestions to make your profile more appealing to potential clients. Let's go through each section:

Title: I recommend removing the experience information from your title since Upwork suggests experience only be added to your summary. Your title could be something like: Chief Financial Officer | Business Management or Chief Financial Officer | Business Manager.

Overview/Summary: It sounds innocent when you say things like "Dependable and self-motivated professional..." but everybody says that. To distinguish yourself, use your title and descriptive terms to describe yourself. Then, focus on the client's needs by mentioning specific services that will meet the client's goals. Clients expect to read about your skills and qualifications, but they really want to know how your skills/qualifications will benefit them.

When focusing on your services (meeting the client's goals) you should mention it very early in your summary. Why? Because only the first two sentences of your summary are shown to clients when they search for freelancers. This means you have limited space to grab their attention, and you want clients to see their goals (your services and deliverables) in those two sentences.

Finally, remove any mention of "starting a freelancing career;" Clients don't care if you're new or been around for 30 years; they only care about a CFO who can get results.

Here is an example of a revised summary:

I'm a highly skilled expert Chief Financial Officer with extensive experience providing business and accounting services to various organizations. I can oversee and manage the financial operations for your business including cost accounting, financial forecasting, budgets, and short- and long-term financial strategic planning.

My experience includes 7 years participating in a high-pressure office environment where I managed multiple simultaneous roles, responsibilities and projects. My clients discover that I'm detail-oriented with a proven ability to multitask, succeed without oversight, orchestrate creative ways around unique hurdles, and effectively resolve problems.

MAIN ACCOMPLISHMENTS
โ—‰ Assisted in building a company from the ground up. This included having a creative vision to develop and
 implement processes from scratch.
โ—‰ Took over as General Manager when needed and worked tirelessly to learn the position, legal requirements, regulatory deadlines, forms, and processes without training, historical data, or established practices.
โ—‰ Cut overspending by 32% by researching and eliminating unnecessary or duplicate expenses.
โ—‰ Maintained 100% control of company-wide funds while successfully completing annual audits with no questionable accounting practices noted.
โ—‰ Tripled the bank account balances, higher than theyโ€™ve been in 20 years of business, within 1 year of management.

How can I help you? Reach out to me via Upwork and let's discuss your needs.

You don't have to keep the content I wrote, but you get the idea--talk about your services and how you can help clients meet their needs.

Portfolio: Add a portfolio to show samples of your work. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you donโ€™t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

I think that's it for now. The biggest thing is your summary: once you make a few updates, I think clients will have a better understanding of the services you offer and how you can help them solve their problems.

Good luck!

Kermit,

Be sure to use the resources Joanne Marie provided to revise and complete your profile.

One important thing you need to do is make your main profile focused on a specific skill area. Customer service and tech support are loosely related, but neither is related to being a healthcare advocate.

In your summary, provide more details about your ability to provide customer service, tech support, billing, sales, and collections support. Talk about your support strategy, your timeliness, the tools/applications you use to manage support, and why you are the best customer support professional the client could hire.

Next, add relevant items to your potfolio. More specifically, items related to customer service/tech support (e.g., customer relationship management tools, examples of tech support guidelines, call log samples, etc.)

Clark: thanks for taking the time to review my profile.  One more question: do you advise creating a specialized healthcare advisor profile to elaborate on this role in a way that can be understood?  Regards.

MD AL,

Good start to your profile. There are some grammatical corrections you should make to your overview/summary.

1) Revise the first sentence to speak from a first-person point of view: "I am a B2B Lead Generation Expert and also a copywriter, data entry expert, and web designer."

2) Change ">>>Industrial Knowledge that I will provide." to ">>>Industry knowledge I will provide:"

3) Change "I am studding at Varendra University in Rajshahi. I am doing B.A honors in English. It's duration 4-year for taking this degree. Now I am in First Semester student."

to

" I am first semester student at Varendra University in Rajshahi pursuing a 4-year B.A Honors degree in English."

4) Change "I'm a dedicated person so, why I can provide you a great service in these sectors. Could you want to increase your business sells? You can give me an opportunity to increase your business sells."

to

"Do you need to increase your business sells? I can help you achieve sales growth using a highly effective lead generation strategy. I'm dedicated and reliable, and can provide you with great data entry, data analytics, and lead generation services. Reach out to me and let's discuss your needs and how I can help."

Next, add more meaningful descriptions to the jobs in your employment history.

Hi Mogaka,

Welcome to Upwork.

To start, you should capitalize the first letter of each word in your title; this will help it stand out: Molecular Analysis, Mosquito Morphological Identification Entomology

Next, remove the words "PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY" and "PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES" from your overview/summary. Clients can only see the first two sentences of your summary when they search, so you want to use important words to grab their attention. For example, I think you should start your summary this way:

Detail-oriented Research assistant with hands-on experience performing clinical and laboratory work to advance research goals. I can help research institutions, universities, and businesses with data review, reporting, and specimen handling for mosquito morphological identification.

Safia,

Your profile looks good. I have only a few suggestions that might help improve it:

1) Capitalize the first letter of each word in your title; this will help it stand out better: Creative Writing, Content Writing, Biography Writing, Translation.

2) I think your overview/summary is good, but I recommend making two or three paragraphs so that it is easier for clients to read.

Kazi Md. Yeakub,

The last sentence in your overview/summary might sound confusing to clients:

"With your deep knowledge of various operating systems, programming languages, and security tools I passed CDCS from London."

This should probably say something like:

"With my deep knowledge of various operating systems, programming languages, and security tools, I passed the Certificate for Documentary Credit Specialists (CDCS) exam and earned the certification conducted by London Institute of Banking and Finance."

Also, add a portfolio to show samples of your work. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you donโ€™t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Then, add short job descriptions to each job in your employment history. This is especially important when the jobs are highly relevant to the services you provide on Upwork.

Hello Andrea

I am new to the platform. I have taken the free courses and I am ready to work. So far I only submitted two proposals with no responses. Can you look at my profile and give feedback? Thank you.

celgins
Community Member

Hello Anthony,

Andrea is an Upwork Moderator. The moderators provide valuable information to freelancers and moderate the forums, but they do not provide feedback on profiles.

I looked through your profile and noticed that it is incomplete, and contains unrelated information; this might be the main reason why you haven't received responses to proposals.

Clients come to Upwork to find freelancers with specific skill sets that can help them meet specific needs. When a client sees your title as "Customer Service/Tech Support," they're expecting to customer service representative or a tech support professional. But your overview/summary talks about real estate, insurance, and home inspections, and mentions gig work with Uber and Grubhub. This is confusing and most clients will bypass your profile.

To eliminate confusion and make your profile more appealing to clients, create a title that focuses on specific work or services. Then, rewrite your summary based on the title. Since you have a variety of skills, you should create one or two Specialized Profiles that focus on those other skills. But make sure your main profile title, summary, and skills list are in sync.

Since you are new to Upwork, make sure your profile is 100% complete before applying to jobs. The best way to complete your profile is to go through the following Academy Courses and Learning Paths:

Blessing,

I think your profile looks good. Your overview/summary is informative; your portfolio and skills list look good; and your project catalog and testimonials look great.

You might want to add short job descriptions to each job in your employment history. This is especially important when the jobs are highly relevant to the services you provide on Upwork.

Based on my view of your profile, it should be 100% complete. If it is not 100%, you may need to check the 100% Profile Completeness: Required and Optional Items to see if you are missing anything.

Good luck!

Eric,

Welcome to Upwork.

Here is what I see in your profile:

Title: I recommend revising your title to align more with the way Upwork suggests titles be written. The title should be focused on a specific skill area, not include too many words. For example, Software Developer or Software Developer:  Driving Business Value.

Overview/Summary: Your summary is well-written and informative. It is very short, but I think it provides enough information for potential clients to understand what you can do to help them. If you want to add anything, maybe you can give examples of software applications you can build; or talk about your method for interacting and communicating with clients during the SDLC; or talk about any successes you've had building apps for other clients/businesses.

Portfolio: Add a portfolio to show samples of your work. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you donโ€™t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create items that demonstrate your skills.

Skills: Be sure to include as many relevant skill categories as you can in your skills list. For example, you might want to add Software Development since you speak about it in your title and summary. Adding Software Development to your skills list will help Upwork better match you with relevant jobs, and help your profile appear when clients search for software developers.

Employment History: Add short job descriptions to each job in your employment history. This is especially important when the jobs are highly relevant to the services you provide on Upwork.

Hi Adeoye,

I agree with Samer's message here. Your profile looks fine and there isn't much more you can do to increase the number of invites you receive.

Just keep applying to jobs by writing great cover letters. Always create a custom cover letter based on the client's specific job requirements. Focus on the client's needs and requirements; highlight your qualifications; and briefly explain how you will meet their needs.

Good luck!
